Objective: To investigate the healing effect of MEBO Ointment in the treatment of traumatic tympanic membrane perforation. Methods:136 cases with traumatic tympanic membrane perforation were admitted from January 2008 to March 2011 and were randomly divided into a treatment group (N=68) who used the gauze soaking with MEBO Ointment as a cover, and a control group (N=68) without any interventions. Results: The three-month follow-up showed that in the treatment group, the curative rates of the small-, medium- and large perforation were 100%, 100% and 83.33% respectively while the healing times for each sub-group were (9.0±1.8) days, (12.0±2.2) days, (20.0±3.6) days respectively. In the sub-group of large perforation, there was one non-healed case and one case that dropped out of the follow-up. On the contrary, in the control group, the curative rates of the small-, medium- and large perforation were 85%, 75%, 50% respectively. There were 6, 4 and 6 non-healed cases in sub-groups of small-, medium- and large perforation. Moreover, 2 non-healed cases in each sub-group were caused by a middle ear infection. The healing times for each sub-group were (14.0±1.6) days, (23.0±2.6) days, (36.0±2.4) days respectively. Conclusion: MEBO Ointment can effectively promote the reconstruction of the epithelial layer and fibrous layer of tympanic membrane and speed up the healing rate of tympanic membrane perforation. Meanwhile, an anti-inflammatory effect of MEBO Ointment was observed. |
